Bali has become one of the destinations in the world that is not recommended for tourists to visit in 2025. What is the reason?
Quoting from The Independent, a travel guide website, Fodor has officially released a list of destinations that should be reconsidered before visiting in 2025. On that list, Bali is the number one destination recommended not to be visited next year.
According to Fodor, Bali has become the number one destination that should be reconsidered for visit in 2025 because it has created a terrifying “plastic apocalypse.” This is partly attributed to overtourism, where the number of tourists exceeds the capacity.
According to the records of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in 2023, Bali was visited by 5.2 million foreign tourists. (wisman). The Independent report states that this number also contributed to nearly 303 thousand tons of plastic waste on the Island of the Gods. “Bali’s beaches, which were once ‘pure,’ are now buried under nearly 303 thousand tons of plastic waste,” wrote The Independent, quoted on Friday (22/11/2024).
Sustainable tourism expert, Kristin Winkaffee, said that “over-tourism” can affect the core of Balinese society’s life. If this continues, Bali could lose its cultural identity.
“Without change, we are risking more than just beautiful scenery.” We risk losing our cultural identity itself,” said Winkaffe.
Besides Bali, there are several other tourist destinations around the world that are also on the “do not visit” list for 2025, namely Mount Everest; and Koh Samui, Thailand. Then, on the same list, there are also destinations in Europe that are not favored by the locals, such as Barcelona, Spain; Mallorca, Spain; Venice, Italy; the Canary Islands, Spain; and Lisbon, Portugal.
Venice and Lisbon are not recommended for tourists because the daily entry fees imposed on tourists are very high. Moreover, both cities are said to lack many accommodation options.
Meanwhile, tourists are not recommended to visit Koh Samui in Thailand due to the potential for congestion after the event The White Lotus. Experts are concerned that the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads could exacerbate existing problems, including wastewater management on the island.
