Kapolri Warns of Disturbances After 2024 Regional Election Vote Counting Results

The Chief of Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, stated that there are several areas prone to disturbances during the vote counting process of the 2024 regional elections or afterwards.

He conveyed this after conducting a security monitoring of the simultaneous regional elections together with Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, and TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto.
“Then we remain vigilant, post the counting results, especially in areas that we have been monitoring due to their high vulnerability at several points,” said Sigit at the TNI Headquarters Subden, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (27/11/2024).
The National Police have mapped several areas that are prone to disturbances during the Pilkada process. Some of these areas, especially those with only two pairs of candidates, are particularly at risk.

“Several points that have been released by Baintelkam and Bawaslu, along with some additional ones that have two pairs of candidates,” said Sigit.

The four-star police general also added that several regions are still relatively safe. He also called for the regional elections process to proceed smoothly, safely, and peacefully.

“Unity and integrity have always been the most important things, and we pray that the entire electoral process can be accepted by all parties and, of course, this becomes our collective hope,” he concluded.

Highlight Potentially Vulnerable Areas

The National Police Chief Listyo previously emphasized the readiness of the police force and all related elements in overseeing the implementation of the Simultaneous Regional Elections 2024, which will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. He reviewed several important points regarding technical readiness, security, and anticipation of potential vulnerabilities in the field.

Listyo stated that the entire distribution of Pilkada logistics is ensured to be safe, including in remote, isolated, and disaster-affected areas. He also highlighted several areas with high potential for vulnerability, such as Papua and regions with single candidates or pairs of candidates.

“We have conducted intensive coordination to ensure that areas with high potential for vulnerability can be monitored and their security maintained.” “All parties must ensure that the regional elections run peacefully and smoothly,” said Listyo at the National Police Headquarters in South Jakarta, Monday (25/11/2024).

He mentioned that the National Police (Polri) is collaborating with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) to optimize security, particularly to anticipate potential security disturbances such as social conflicts and natural disasters.

Supervisory patrols to prevent vote-buying are conducted in all regions to counter practices that could undermine the integrity of the local elections, such as money politics and mass mobilization.

“This patrol is important to ensure that there are no actions that violate the law or ethics in the regional elections. We want to create clean, integrity-driven, and democratic elections,” he explained.
