Commission II of the House of Representatives Highlights Low Voter Participation in the 2024 Regional Elections

Chairman of Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, highlighted the low level of public participation in the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada). It is known that the simultaneous regional elections will be held on November 27, 2024, throughout Indonesia.

“Regarding the low voter turnout in almost all simultaneous 2024 Governor, Regent, and Mayor Elections in Indonesia, Commission II of the Indonesian House of Representatives is currently observing,” said Rifqy to reporters on Friday (29/11/2024).

He also highlighted the possible causes of the low participation, such as the simultaneous election schedule that actually creates anomalies.

“Does the synchronization of the elections we conduct actually create anomalies related to public participation, or for example, the proximity of the schedules between the legislative elections, presidential elections, and regional elections also reduce the incentive for voter participation,” he added.

In addition, Rifqy also linked the low participation to the candidacy process, which is considered too limited.

“Because politicians who have been elected as members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), provincial, district/city regional councils based on PKPU are required to resign even before being inaugurated.” “Well, things like this I think also make this contest limited,” he explained.

“In the context of the candidates, and it could be that if we conduct in-depth research, this will affect public support in the context of the regional elections,” concluded Rifqy.
