Mount Semeru Erupts 5 Times, Eruption Column Height Reaches 800 Meters

Jakarta – Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, recorded several eruptions on Friday morning, with eruption heights reaching 400 to 800 meters.

“An eruption of Mount Semeru occurred at 06:30 WIB, but the visual of the eruption was not observed, and at the time the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing,” said Liswanto, Officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, in a written statement received on Friday (29/11/2024).
According to the data obtained, the mountain with an elevation of 3,676 meters above sea level (asl) experienced five eruptions throughout Friday morning, namely at 00:08 WIB, 05:08 WIB, 05:47 WIB, 06:14 WIB, and 06:30 WIB. The first eruption occurred at 00:08 WIB, with an eruption column height of about 500 meters above the summit. The ash column, colored white to gray with thick intensity, is directed to the northwest. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 130 seconds.

The next eruption was recorded at 05:08 WIB, with an eruption column height of about 500 meters above the summit. This activity was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19 mm and a duration of 109 seconds.

At 05:47 WIB, the third eruption occurred, producing an eruption column 800 meters above the summit or equivalent to an altitude of 4,476 meters above sea level.

“The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest.” “This eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 109 seconds,” said Liswanto, as reported by Antara.

The next eruption occurred at 06:14 WIB, with an eruption column reaching 400 meters above the summit. The ash column appeared white to gray with moderate intensity, drifting to the north. At the time the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing.
