BPOM Releases List of 55 Cosmetics Containing Mercury & Hazardous Substances

Jakarta, – The National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM RI) has recently released a list of cosmetic products containing hazardous substances for health. This finding originated from sampling and testing during the period from November 2023 to October 2024.
The head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar, announced that 55 cosmetic products were found to contain prohibited and/or hazardous substances. The findings consist of 35 cosmetic products made under production contracts, 6 cosmetic products produced and distributed by the cosmetic industry, and 14 imported cosmetic products.

The sampled and tested cosmetic products were found to contain prohibited or hazardous substances such as mercury, retinoic acid, hydroquinone, Red 3 dye, Red 10 dye, Acid Orange 7 dye, and lead.

The use of cosmetics containing prohibited and hazardous substances can pose health risks to consumers.

Mercury can cause skin discoloration in the form of black spots (ochronosis), allergies, skin irritation, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and kidney damage.

Then, Red K3, Red K10, and Acid Orange 7 are carcinogenic or cause cancer and can disrupt liver function. Lastly, lead in cosmetics can damage organ function and body systems.

“Regarding cosmetic products that have been proven to contain prohibited and/or hazardous substances, BPOM has revoked distribution permits and implemented a temporary cessation of activities (PSK), including the cessation of production, distribution, and importation activities,” said Taruna Ikrar as quoted on the official BPOM website, Tuesday (3/12/2024).

BPOM also firmly urges business operators to conduct their business in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.

“I emphasize to business operators who produce, import, and distribute cosmetics containing prohibited and/or hazardous substances to immediately withdraw these products from circulation and destroy them. The results of this product withdrawal must be reported by the business operators to BPOM,” said Ikrar.
