Kemendikdasmen Highlights Challenges and Potential of Inclusive Education on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Jakarta – The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) through the Directorate of Community Education and Special Education (PMPK) held the peak commemoration of International Disability Day (HDI) 2024 at the Tribrata Ballroom, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (3/12/2024).

This event carries the theme “Together Realizing Inclusivity Towards a Progressive and Creative Generation” with the aim of promoting inclusivity, equal opportunities, and the empowerment of persons with disabilities.

In his speech, the Director of Community Education and Special Education (PMPK), Baharudin, highlighted several key challenges in the implementation of inclusive education in Indonesia.

He emphasized that although there have been various initiatives, structural and social barriers still hinder the creation of truly inclusive education.

“The first is how the implementation of inclusive education in schools. Currently, there is still resistance from various communities towards the presence of students with disabilities,” said Baharudin in his speech.

Baharudin also highlighted the issue of the limited number of teachers as one of the main obstacles in realizing inclusive education in Indonesia.

“The second challenge is the limited number of teachers,” he added.

Furthermore, according to the data provided, there are 341,414 students with disabilities in Indonesia, consisting of 162,038 students studying in special schools and 179,376 students studying in regular schools based on dapodik data as of November 11, 2024.

“The third challenge is that there are still around 341,414 students with disabilities,” he explained.
