Palace: Surhaji, the Iced Tea Vendor, Has Forgiven Gus Miftah

Jakarta – Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi stated that Gus Miftah has received forgiveness from Surhaji, the iced tea vendor who was insulted while selling his goods during Gus Miftah’s sermon some time ago.

“Mr. Surhaji has already forgiven him, and we hope that the relationship can be reestablished well,” said Hasan in a video broadcast received on Wednesday (4/12/2024).

Hasan hopes that after forgiving each other, the sense of family from both sides can grow and they can reconcile. In fact, Surhaji requested that Gus Miftah give a sermon in the village where he lives.

“The situation can return to being good and familial relationships can grow between the two of them, even Mr. Surhaji expressed a desire to see Gus Miftah hold a study session in his village, Banyusari Village,” Hasan revealed.

Hasan ensured that, in light of the incident, the Palace took the lesson to always be careful when making statements in public. Especially when meeting the common people who work honestly to support their families.

“We all, not just the president, should take a very valuable lesson from this incident. We really need to be careful in making statements and maintaining our attitudes, especially towards the common people who are struggling and sweating to meet their daily needs,” Hasan concluded.

Gus Miftah Apologizes

Previously reported, after going viral and causing outrage, Gus Miftah publicly apologized for his remarks to an ice seller who was selling during the religious lecture he was leading.

“With humility, I apologize for my mistake.” “I often joke with anyone, so regarding the joke directed at the person involved, I will apologize directly,” he said in a clarification video received by Liputan6.com on Wednesday (4/12/2024).

He hopes that the public, especially those who feel disturbed, can open the door of forgiveness for him. Gus Miftah admitted that his words at that time were inappropriate and excessive, especially in the context of reprimanding a tea seller in the midst of a crowd of worshippers.

“I realize that my joke this time has caused an uproar and may be considered excessive by the public,” he said.
