KKP Foils Fish Theft by Malaysian-Flagged Foreign Vessels in the Strait of Malacca

Medan – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) apprehended 3 units of foreign fishing vessels (KIA) illegally fishing under the Malaysian flag in the waters of the Malacca Strait.

The Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP), Pung Nugroho Saksono, commonly known as Ipunk, explained that the Shark 16 Surveillance Ship, which was conducting patrols in the Malacca Strait, caught three foreign fishing vessels (KIA) in the act.

Ipunk stated this during a press conference at the Dock of the Fisheries Training and Counseling Center (BP3) Medan, North Sumatra (Sumut), on Thursday (5/12/2024).

“All three KIA vessels originated from Malaysia and were engaged in fishing activities in the Malacca Strait WPP-NRI 571 waters using prohibited fishing gear, namely trawls, without the necessary permits valid in Indonesia,” he explained.

Captain of Hiu 16, Albert Essing explained, the three KIA were captured on November 30, 2024, with hull numbers KM PKFB 960 measuring 49.80 GT, KM PKFB 1913 measuring 68.56 GT, and KM PKBF 1916 measuring 69.07 GT.

“If evaluated, the potential value of state losses that can be saved per year reaches Rp 16,004,582,204,” he stated.
