Jusuf Kalla Becomes Chairman of PMI for the 2024-2029 Term

Jakarta – Jusuf Kalla, or JK, has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) for the 2024-2029 term. The appointment was made through acclamation at the XXII National Conference (Munas) of PMI held on December 8-9, 2024, in Jakarta.

This decision was announced in the Second Plenary Session on the evening of December 8, 2024, after Jusuf Kalla’s accountability report was unanimously accepted by the majority of the National Conference participants.

At the third plenary session held on Monday morning (December 9, 2024), the decision was officially ratified. This moment of determination was marked by a symbolic gavel strike, which confirmed Jusuf Kalla as the chairman of PMI.

“All participants of the National Conference have decided to appoint Jusuf Kalla to lead PMI again for the 2024-2029 period,” said the Chairman of the Conference, Adang Rochjana.

In his statement after being appointed as the chairman of PMI, Jusuf Kalla expressed his appreciation to the participants of the Munas.

“I would like to thank all the participants of the National Conference who have entrusted me to lead PMI again for the 2024-2029 period,” said Jusuf Kalla on Monday.

Previously, the Chairman of the Second Plenary Session, Adang Rochjana, stated that out of the 490 participants present, who were representatives from 34 provincial PMIs and one National Volunteer Forum (Forelnas), they gave positive feedback on the accountability report of the PMI Chairman and supported Jusuf Kalla to lead PMI again.

Single Candidate for PMI Chairman

Jusuf Kalla became the sole candidate after the only other candidate, Agung Laksono, failed to meet the minimum support requirement of 20 percent.

The Chairman of the Munas Committee, Fachmi Idris, explained that referring to Article 66, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the PMI Bylaws, based on the reports received, there were two candidates for the general chairman, namely Agung Laksono and Jusuf Kalla. Until the deadline set, the letters of support received for Agung Laksono did not reach 20 percent of the votes from the eligible delegates.

“Thus, he is no longer a candidate. Meanwhile, for Jusuf Kalla, the support received exceeds 50 percent of the eligible delegates. According to PMI regulations, if a candidate receives more than 50 percent support, that candidate can be appointed by acclamation as the General Chairperson,” explained Fachmi Idris.

The XXII National Conference, themed “Strengthening Synergy for Humanity,” also serves as a platform to evaluate the organization’s performance during the 2019-2024 period.

In his accountability report, Jusuf Kalla outlined PMI’s role in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, disaster response actions in various regions, climate change adaptation programs, and international humanitarian actions such as in Gaza.
