Probolinggo – The Tengger tribe will carry out the sacred Wulan Kapitu ritual, a long-standing traditional ceremony, from December 2024 to January 2025. This ritual will affect tourist access in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) area, where motor vehicles are prohibited from passing except in emergencies.
Wulan Kapitu, which means the Seventh Month in the Javanese calendar, is a sacred month for the Tengger people. This tradition is rich in spiritual values and serves as a moment to draw closer to God through a series of rituals.
In its history, the Tengger Tribe is known as the guardian of traditions, including religious ceremonies centered around Mount Bromo, a sacred mountain considered an embodiment of the God Brahma.
The peak of Wulan Kapitu begins on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 6:00 PM WIB and lasts until Monday, December 30, 2024, at 6:00 PM WIB. The closure of tourist areas in the Tengger Caldera is enforced during this period to ensure the ritual proceeds solemnly.
Bambang Suprapto, Secretary of the Paruman Dukun Pandita Tengger, explained that the tourist areas of Mount Bromo, Laut Pasir, Savana, and Mentigen will be free of motor vehicles.

“At the beginning and end of the month of Wulan Kapitu, we perform Tapabrata, including the mutih fasting, which requires tranquility,” he said on Saturday (7/12/2024).
The mutih fasting, which is the core of this tradition, is carried out with the prohibition of consuming sugar, salt, and foods that stimulate worldly desires. This ritual aims to enhance the spiritual abilities of the Tengger community in maintaining harmony with nature.
