Indonesian National Team Defeats Myanmar in the 2024 AFF Cup, Erick Thohir: Hopefully Performance Improves

Jakarta – The Chairman of PSSI, Erick Thohir, expressed gratitude for the Indonesian national team’s victory over Myanmar in the opening match of Group B of the AFF Cup 2024. He mentioned that this result would be a good capital for Shin Tae-yong’s team in navigating the competition.

The Indonesian national team defeated Myanmar 1-0 at Thuwunna Stadium on Monday (9/12/2024) evening WIB, thanks to an own goal by goalkeeper Zin Nyi Nyi Aung in the 76th minute.

“Alhamdulillah we managed to secure three points in the opening match. Every opening match is definitely a tough one, especially since most of our players are young players under 22 years old,” said Erick Thohir in his statement.

“A good start.” Especially since the national team in the ASEAN Cup is dominated by players who play a lot in the league. This means their experience increases by representing the national team,” continued Erick.

Erick hopes that the Indonesian national team can continue to improve their performance in this prestigious Southeast Asian event.

Indonesia took the initiative in the attack. However, Myanmar got the first golden opportunity. Lwin Moe Aung in a free position received a teammate’s cross. An empty goal awaited him because Cahya Supriadi advanced. Fortunately, his shot went wide.

The Indonesian national team is still struggling to break through the host’s defense. Meanwhile, Myanmar is starting to relieve the pressure. The match is proceeding at a moderate pace.

Marselino Ferdinan managed to find space on the right side of the back line. He sent a high pass that was met with a header from Hokky Caraka. Unfortunately, the effort was easily caught by the opposing goalkeeper.

Myanmar created another dangerous situation. The throw-in momentarily made Indonesia panic. A moment later, Lwin Moe Aung took a shot that was saved by Cahya Supriadi.

From the corner kick that was created, Cahya Supriadi deflected Maung Maung Lwin’s shot until it hit the goalpost and required medical attention.

Indonesia failed to capitalize on the dead ball situation. As many as four corner kicks and two throw-ins from Pratama Arhan did not result in any goals. Myanmar played solidly, clearing the incoming balls.

Indonesia’s set piece finally resulted in a chance. Dony Tri Pamungkas’s corner kick landed on Muhammad Ferarri’s head. However, the captain’s header went wide.

Now it’s Myanmar’s turn to threaten. Win Thein Zaw’s powerful shot from outside the penalty box surged towards the Indonesian goal. Cahya Supriadi was helpless. Fortunately, the round ball still hit the crossbar.

There was an additional four minutes in the Myanmar vs Indonesia national team match. However, both teams failed to take advantage of this to break the deadlock.
