Gorontalo – The Gorontalo City Government officially launched the Disability and Elderly Love Village on Sunday (8/12/2024) at Kedai Tuli, Molosipat U Village, Sipatana District. This event became one of the highlights of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, focusing on strengthening the commitment to social inclusion and empowering vulnerable communities, particularly persons with disabilities and the elderly.
The Acting Mayor of Gorontalo, Ismail Madjid, in his speech emphasized the importance of synergy between the government, society, and the private sector to create an environment that supports inclusive living for all. According to him, the commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities is not just an annual routine, but a momentum to evaluate and enhance the commitment to equality and the rights of persons with disabilities.
“International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a reminder for all of us to commit to creating an environment that supports persons with disabilities. We must work together to eliminate physical, technological, and attitudinal barriers that often limit their participation in society,” said Ismail.
The Gorontalo City Government, through the declaration of the Disability and Elderly Love Village, is taking concrete steps in the effort to create an inclusive life. Ismail stated that the government is committed to providing protection, opportunities, and welfare for people with disabilities and the elderly.
The main focus of this program is to improve accessibility in various aspects, such as education, health, and employment, so that people with disabilities can lead independent and dignified lives. “Through this village, we want to make it a symbol of the care and solidarity of the Gorontalo community. Additionally, we strive to ensure that people with disabilities and the elderly have equal access to public facilities and basic services,” added Ismail.

The launch of the Disability and Elderly Love Village also serves as a tangible manifestation of cooperation between various parties, including the disability community, social organizations, and local government. In between the events, several activities were held to commemorate International Disability Day, including public discussions, exhibitions of works by people with disabilities, and entertainment from the local arts community. This event received high enthusiasm from the community, who also provided support through various forms of donations and active participation.
Closing his speech, Ismail invited all elements of society to make International Day of Persons with Disabilities a moment of reflection and strategic planning to create a better future for all, without discrimination.
