Yusril: Prabowo’s Government is Committed to Human Rights

Jakarta, — Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights (HAM), Immigration, and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the Prabowo Subianto administration is fully committed to the protection, promotion, enforcement, and fulfillment of human rights. This was conveyed by Yusril during the Peak Commemoration of the 76th Human Rights Day with the theme ‘Harmony in Diversity Towards Golden Indonesia 2045’ at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta, on Tuesday night (10/12).

“This government has a strong commitment to human rights. This is demonstrated by the establishment of the Ministry of Human Rights as the Governmental Human Rights Focal Point,” said Yusril in his speech.

He stated that Indonesia is the 4th country to have a Ministry of Human Rights, which is mandated to carry out the state’s obligations—especially the government’s—in the field of human rights as mentioned in Article 28i paragraph (4) of the 1945 Constitution.

He said that the previous administration had already shown a strong commitment to human rights, which will be continued and strengthened by the current administration, both in terms of civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights.

“Improvements still need to be continuously made, whether it concerns legislation, the behavior of civil servants, or defense and security personnel,” said Yusril.

“Therefore, mainstreaming and strengthening human rights for civil servants, defense, and security personnel have become a necessity and a priority,” he continued.

Yusril added that the declining Indonesian democracy index requires more attention from the current government to improve and guarantee civil liberties.

He also highlighted the high poverty rate reaching 25.22 million people, malnutrition, and inequality, which should be a serious concern for the current government to ensure the fulfillment of basic rights.

He said that the factors causing poverty need to be addressed, including online gambling.
