KPU: Candidates for Regional Heads Who Lose to the Empty Box Can Run Again in the Repeat Regional Election

Jakarta – The General Election Commission (KPU) of Indonesia has stated that single pairs of regional head candidates who lose against the empty box can run again in the re-election. There will be new pairs of regional head candidates participating in the contest.

“Regarding candidates who lost in a single candidate election, whether they can run again, the answer is yes as long as there are still those who are willing to run and there is potential for new candidates as per the regulations,” said the Chairman of the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU RI), Mochammad Afifuddin, in a press conference on Friday (13/12/2024).

He stated that there are two regions that will hold re-elections, namely Bangka Regency and Pangkalpinang City in August 2025. The re-elections are being held because the single candidate for regional head lost against the empty box.

“There are two places where we will follow all the processes.” “Now, what I want to convey is the registration of the nomination stages, document verification. These are stages that cannot be shortened,” he said.

“So how many days are those stages in the rules that cannot be shortened.” Different from the campaign period. That’s why we ended up (holding the repeat local elections) in August,” Afifuddin added.
