Mount Semeru Erupts Tuesday Morning, December 17, 2024, Spewing Volcanic Ash 1,000 Meters to the Northeast

Jakarta – Mount Semeru erupted on Tuesday morning (12/17/2024), at 06:09 WIB. The report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) stated that the height of the eruption column from Mount Semeru this time was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the summit, or about 4,676 meters above sea level.

The ash column from the eruption of Mount Semeru was observed to be white to gray in color with a thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 135 seconds.

Residents and tourists in the vicinity are prohibited from engaging in any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 km from the summit (eruption center).

Outside that distance, the community does not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbank (river buffer) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential risk of being affected by the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lahar flows up to 13 km from the summit.

Residents are also urged not to engage in activities within a 3 km radius from the crater/summit of Semeru Volcano due to the risk of volcanic rock (pyroclastic) eruptions.

Be cautious of the potential for pyroclastic flows (APG), lava flows, and lahars along the river/valley flows originating from the summit of Semeru Volcano, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lahars in the small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.

Throughout 2024, Mount Semeru has recorded 2,134 eruptions. Until today, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 06:42 WIB, Mount Semeru in Lumajang, East Java, is still on Alert status (Level II).
