Conflict in Rempang Heats Up Again, 8 Residents Injured

Batam – The conflict on Rempang Island has flared up again. Dozens of people attacked several community posts opposing the relocation of the Rempang Eco City project in Kampung Sembulang Hulu and Kampung Sei Buluh, Sembulang Village, Galang District, early Wednesday morning (12/18/2024), around 00:50 WIB. They were intimidated with acts of violence, resulting in injuries, by a group suspected to be company employees.

Preliminary data collected indicates that at least eight residents were injured and have been taken to the nearest hospital. With details including, four people sustained lacerations on their heads, one person suffered serious injuries, one resident was hit by an arrow, one person had a broken arm, and one resident had minor injuries. In addition, dozens of residents’ motor vehicles were also damaged.

In light of the recurring incidents of violence, Ishak, Coordinator of the Rempang Galang Community Alliance, along with the residents of Kampung Tua in Rempang, called on President Prabowo and the Indonesian House of Representatives to ensure the protection of the indigenous and local communities of Rempang over their ancestral lands.

“At the same time, firmly canceling all plans for the development of the Tempang Eco-city PSN,” he said.

The Chief of Police is also requested to instruct his subordinates to enforce the law seriously and firmly against all incidents of intimidation and violence committed against the Rempang community.

In addition, the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is urged to monitor and take firm action against the series of human rights violations occurring in Rempang, while also coordinating and ensuring protection schemes for all indigenous communities in Rempang.

Meanwhile, Fernaldi Anggada, one of the company’s commissioners involved in the Rempang Eco City project, has not yet made a statement regarding the ongoing conflict when contacted by reporters.
