Getting to Know the Topat War Tradition, a Reflection of Harmonious Society in Lombok

Jakarta – Topat War is one of the unique and meaningful traditions originating from Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This tradition is a form of ritual that reflects the harmony among religious communities in the region, particularly between the Hindu and Sasak Muslim communities.

The Topat War is held every year at Pura Lingsar, a temple considered sacred by both Hindus and Muslims. This event takes place in a joyful atmosphere, involving people from various backgrounds to collectively celebrate their gratitude to the Creator for the abundance of blessings and bountiful harvests.

This tradition is called Perang Topat because it uses topat or ketupat as symbolic weapons. Thousands of small ketupat are thrown between the participants of the war, which actually resembles a game more than a conflict.

The throwing of the ketupat symbolizes prayers, hopes, and offerings to ancestors and deities for blessings and fertility. Although it is called a war, this tradition takes place with great joy and without any elements of hostility.

The participants actually laugh and rejoice while throwing ketupat at each other. The philosophical meaning of Perang Topat is very profound.

This ritual is not only an expression of gratitude but also a symbol of unity and harmony among religious communities in Lombok. Pura Lingsar itself is a symbol of tolerance, as it has two sacred areas, one for Hindus and another for the Sasak Muslim community.

This tradition shows how diversity can coexist in harmony, a value that is highly relevant in today’s society, which is often divided by differences.

Diversity

Besides its religious and cultural aspects, Perang Topat has also become a tourist attraction that supports the local economy. Tourists from various regions and even from abroad come to witness this tradition, bringing positive impacts to the local community.

The presence of tourists provides an opportunity for local residents to showcase the art, handicrafts, and traditional cuisine of Lombok. Thus, this tradition not only preserves cultural values but also serves as a driving force for the community’s economy.

With all its uniqueness, the Topat War is not only a cultural heritage of Lombok but also an inspiration about the importance of harmony, tolerance, and the spirit of togetherness in community life.

This tradition teaches that diversity is strength, and gratitude is the key to achieving shared prosperity.
