Makassar,– The police suspect that the production of counterfeit money in the campus environment of the State Islamic University (UIN) Alauddin Makassar in Gowa Regency is intended for the simultaneous 2024 regional elections.The police are still pursuing three individuals suspected of being involved in the counterfeit money production network at the UIN Makassar campus.One of those on the Most Wanted List (DPO) is ASS, a politician who once aimed to run for the South Sulawesi gubernatorial election in 2024. ASS was also known to have run for the position of mayor of Makassar in 2013.
“This suspect was about to run in the recent regional election, but did not have or did not have enough seats to support him,” said the South Sulawesi Police Chief, Inspector General Pol Yudhiawan Wibisono, Thursday (19/12). In addition, the money for purchasing production raw materials is also suspected to come from ASS and two other DPOs who are believed to be donors in this case.

“One sheet of Korean currency worth 5000 won, 111 sheets of Vietnamese currency worth 500 dong, and two sheets of Indonesian currency with a denomination of 1000 from the 1964 emission, as well as 234 sheets of 100 thousand from the 2016 emission,” he said.In addition, the police also seized evidence in the form of photocopies of Bank Indonesia (BI) deposit certificates and a piece of state securities (SBN) paper worth trillions of rupiah. The police also secured the counterfeit money printing machine, which originated from China.

“There is one sheet of photocopied BI deposit certificate worth 45 trillion, and one sheet of state securities (SBN) worth 700 trillion, then there is ink, a machine, a magnifying glass, everything totals 98 items, specifically the printing machine was bought in Surabaya but the goods from China are worth 600 million,” he explained.This case was uncovered when a resident of Gowa Regency received counterfeit money and reported it to the police. The police then conducted an investigation and successfully arrested dozens of perpetrators, including the head of the UIN Makassar library.”So there are 17 of them with different roles, including two employees from a state-owned bank,” he said.
