Gunung Raung Erupts, Releases Volcanic Ash Up to 2,000 Meters High

Banyuwangi – Mount Raung Volcano erupted on Tuesday (24/12/2024) today at around 09:30 WIB. The mountain located on the border of three regencies, namely Banyuwangi, Jember, and Bondowoso, emitted volcanic ash up to 2,000 meters high.

Information about the increased activity was announced by the Raung Volcano Observation Post (PPGA) in Sumberarum Village, Songgon District, Banyuwangi.

“There has been an eruption of Mount Raung, East Java on December 24, 2024, at 09:30 WIB with an ash column height observed to be approximately 2,000 meters above the summit,” said the Head of the Raung Volcano Observation Post (PPGA), Burhan Aletea, on Tuesday, (24/12/2024).

According to Burhan, the ash column observed was gray with thick intensity leaning towards the east, with an altitude of approximately 5,332 meters above sea level (asl).

“This eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 32 mm and a duration of approximately 4 minutes and 42 seconds,” said Burhan.

Based on records, currently, Mount Raung, which stands at 3,332 meters above sea level, is at alert status level II.

“We recommend that the public or tourists do not approach the eruption center in the summit crater within a radius of 3 kilometers,” Burhan emphasized.

PPGA Raung also urges the public not to descend into the caldera and to refrain from staying overnight in the crater area.

“We urge the public and climbers not to stay overnight in the Mount Raung area because it is very dangerous,” he concluded.
