1-Year Discount from the Charges, Crazy Rich Surabaya Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

The Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court has concluded the trial of the gold trading corruption case at PT Antam that ensnared Surabaya’s crazy rich Budi Said. He was found guilty and sentenced to prison.

“To sentence the defendant to 15 years in prison,” said Chief Justice Tony Irfan at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court, Friday (27/12).

The panel also imposed a fine of Rp1 billion on Budi. The money must be paid within one month after the verdict becomes legally binding.

“If the fine is not paid, it will be replaced with a six-month imprisonment,” said Tony.

The panel also imposed a substitute sentence for Budi. The total amounts to 58,841 kilograms of gold or its equivalent in rupiah.

“Or the equivalent of Rp35,526,893,372.99 as compensation for state losses,” said Tony.

The replacement fund must be paid within one month after the legally binding verdict. If not, the prosecutor is ordered to seize Budi’s property to be auctioned.

“If the property is insufficient, then it will be replaced with an eight-year prison sentence,” said Tony.

The sentence is: “The sentence is lower than the prosecutor’s demand.” The public prosecutor requested the panel to impose a 16-year prison sentence on Budi.

“To sentence the defendant Budi Said to 16 years in prison,” said the public prosecutor (JPU) at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court, Friday, December 13, 2024.

In this case, the prosecutor also requested the judge to impose a fine of Rp1 billion on Budi. If not paid within a month, the prison sentence will be extended by six months.

The prosecutor also requested that Budi be given a substitute punishment of 58.135 kilograms of gold, and 1.136 kilograms of gold. If converted to Indonesian rupiah, the value reaches Rp35.07 billion and Rp1.07 trillion.

The substitute penalty must be paid within one month after the verdict becomes legally binding. If not paid, the prosecutor will seize Budi’s property.

“In the event that the defendant does not have sufficient assets to pay the replacement money, it will be replaced with an eight-year prison sentence,” said the prosecutor.
