Gorontalo – PSSI officially announced the termination of the head coach of the Indonesian National Team, Shin Tae-yong, in a press conference at Menara Danareksa, Jakarta, Monday (6/1/2025). This decision marks the end of the five-year tenure of the South Korean coach with the Garuda squad.
PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir stated that this decision has gone through careful consideration for the advancement of national football.
“What we are doing today is solely for the good of the national team.” “We want to continue building Indonesian football to be more competitive at the international level,” said Erick Thohir.
Nevertheless, the decision has drawn strong reactions from fans of the Indonesian National Team. Many lamented the dismissal of Shin Tae-yong, especially with important moments like the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers approaching.
Haikal, one of the loyal supporters of the Indonesian National Team from Gorontalo, expressed disappointment with the decision. “We deeply regret this.” Why should Shin Tae-yong be dismissed just because of the results in the AFF Cup? He has worked to the best of his ability and made a significant impact on the team,” he stated.
According to Haikal, STY’s coaching style has brought positive changes to the Indonesian national team. “The national team is already accustomed to Shin Tae-yong’s system and strategy.” If a new coach comes in, the players will definitely need time to adapt,” he added.
He also believes that giving a time target to the old coach is wiser than replacing the coach midway.
“In my opinion, Shin Tae-yong is a good coach.” But why does he have to be replaced now? he said with a disappointed tone.
Consideration of PSSI
Erick Thohir revealed that the decision to end the collaboration with Shin Tae-yong had been considered for the past few months.
“We are grateful for Coach Shin’s dedication and contributions over the past five years.” This is a difficult decision, but we believe it is the best step for the future of the Indonesian National Team,” said Erick.
During his tenure, Shin Tae-yong successfully made the Indonesian National Team more competitive in various international tournaments. However, the results in the 2024 AFF Cup, which were considered unsatisfactory, became one of the main reasons PSSI made this decision.
PSSI is currently looking for a new coach who is expected to bring the Indonesian national team to a higher level. Erick Thohir ensured that the selection process is carried out very carefully to align with the vision and mission of national football.
“We want to ensure that the new coach can continue the foundation that has already been built by Shin Tae-yong,” concluded Erick.
