Jakarta -Officers from the Class II A Tanjung Uban Maritime and Coast Guard Unit (KPLP), Bintan, Riau Islands, detained a foreign ship named Fianit flying the flag of the Republic of Vanuatu on December 31, 2024.
The foreign ship was secured in the waters of Berakit, Bintan Regency, for allegedly violating several navigation regulations.
The foreign ship, captained by Zamuraev Evgenii along with six Russian crew members, was on its way from Korea to India.
KPLP officers found that the ship did not have a Sailing Approval Letter (SPB) and failed to show other official documents. In addition, from the monitoring of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), this ship frequently enters and exits the waters of the Riau Islands without permission.
Allegedly Disposing of Waste
The Director of KPLP, Jon Kenedi, revealed that the ship is also suspected of dumping waste in the waters of Berakit. “Third, there is a violation of Article 325, which states that anyone who disposes of waste.” “This is still an allegation, and we will investigate what mistakes they have truly committed,” said Jon Kenedi in his written statement on Saturday (January 4, 2025).
The suspicion is that the ship was involved in waste disposal activities, but Jon Kenedi explained that this is still under investigation. Based on the crew’s confession, the ship experienced engine failure in the waters of Berakit.
According to Jon Kenedi, if a ship experiences engine failure, the ship’s crew should report it, request assistance, and respond to questions from the authorities.
“We are still conducting further investigations to determine whether waste dumping actually occurred or not,” he said.
Until now, the Vanuatu-flagged ship has been detained at the KPLP Class II Tanjung Uban dock, Bintan, for further legal proceedings.
