Broken Bridge, Dozens of Students in Sukabumi Bravely Face River Currents to Get to School

Sukabumi – A concerning situation is being faced by elementary and middle school students who are forced to cross the swift currents of the Cikarang River from their homes in Waluran District to Surade District, Sukabumi Regency, due to a broken bridge.

The 30-meter bridge connecting two sub-districts was destroyed due to a flash flood that occurred on December 4, 2024. The students crossing the river to get to school had to take off their shoes to avoid getting wet.

This was expressed by one of the students of Cijambe State Elementary School, Zahra Aulia (11). She is forced to overcome her fear every time she crosses the river current on her way to school, even though she is accompanied by her parents.

Zahra hopes that the Bojong Koneng suspension bridge can be rebuilt so that they no longer have to struggle against the swift river current.

“If you say scared, then yes, I am scared, but if we go far, the closest place is here.” Yes, with the help of my parents, if the water is high, they hold me. “We want the bridge to be good, so we don’t get wet anymore, to keep our spirits up, the bridge is being built, if the water is high, our clothes get wet,” Zahra said on Wednesday (1/8/2025).

Not only the students, but also the residents who want to engage in farming and gardening activities are forced to brave the swift currents of the river.

“Because I need it, my child crosses this bridge every day, and yesterday there was a flood disaster, causing the bridge to collapse.” “I’m worried because my child crosses this bridge every day, it disrupts my activities as a farmer, so I have to take my child first,” said Nuryani, a resident of Mekarmukti Village, Waluran District.
