KPK Also Examines Former KPU Chairman Arief Budiman in Connection with Hasto Kristiyanto Case

Jakarta – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is still gathering statements from several witnesses after naming PDIP Secretary-General, Hasto Kristiyanto, as a suspect in the bribery case of the Replacement of Members of the House of Representatives (PAW) and the obstruction of the investigation of fugitive Harun Masiku. The witness examination targeted former Chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU) Arief Budiman.

“The examination was conducted at the KPK Red and White Building,” said KPK Spokesperson, Tessa Mahardika Sugiato in her statement, Friday (10/1/2025).

Budiman was questioned in the case along with former Chairman of the KPU Musi Rawas, Anasta Tias, and the Secretary of the KPU leadership, Rahmat Setiawan Tonindya.

The KPK previously charged PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto with two cases simultaneously. First, he was named a suspect in the alleged bribery of the Replacement of Members of the House of Representatives (PAW) of former PDIP legislative candidate, Harun Masiku. Hasto’s designation as a suspect was announced on December 24, 2024, on Christmas Eve.

“The investigators found evidence of the involvement of Mr. HK, who is the Secretary-General of PDI Perjuangan, and Mr. DTI, who is Mr. HK’s trusted associate,” said KPK Chairman Setyo Budiyanto when announcing Hasto’s legal status as a suspect.

According to him, Hasto was involved in efforts to offer gifts or promises to Wahyu Setiawan, a member of the General Election Commission (KPU), together with Agustiani Tio F, related to the determination of the elected members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2019-2024 period.

Setyo admitted that the KPK only recently found sufficient evidence to name Hasto as a suspect, even though the Harun Masiku case has been ongoing for five years.

“Why only now (was the suspect named), this is due to the sufficiency of the evidence.” The investigators were more confident after the stage of searching for the fugitive Harun Masiku, where there were activities of summons, examination, and seizure of electronic evidence, and it was there that we obtained a lot of evidence and leads,” he explained.
