Jakarta Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan urged President Prabowo Subianto not to hesitate to dismiss state officials who defy the budget efficiency policy.
Luhut is concerned that the presence of the state officials could hinder the work programs of the Prabowo Subianto administration.
“I told the President, Sir, if you can’t handle this one, just fire him, Sir.” Why should we keep someone who causes problems within the government? “If you don’t fire them, you won’t succeed,” he said at the Indonesia Economic Summit 2025 by the Indonesian Business Council (IBC) at the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (February 18).
He explained that the budget efficiency policy implemented by the Prabowo government aims to reduce the burden on the state budget. Indonesia itself has a great opportunity to encourage the private sector in supporting the national economy.
Dependency State Budget

Moreover, many countries have successfully reduced their dependence on the state budget by promoting the private sector. In this regard, Luhut cited France as a successful example of driving its economy.
“And I think today we also learn something from the past.” And the role of the private sector is very important in driving economic growth. Our economy is fundamentally driven by private companies. So please understand,” he insisted.
Nevertheless, Luhut requested that the budget efficiency of around Rp300 trillion be carried out carefully. This is to anticipate the negative impact of budget austerity policies on Indonesia’s economic growth.
“Budget efficiency, I think, is very important.” But we must be very careful in allocating this Rp 300 trillion. Something like this must be studied carefully,” he emphasized.
