The Minister of Communication and Information Technology Appoints a Police Officer as Acting Director General of Digital Space Oversight, Who?

Jakarta – Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid officially appointed high-ranking police officer Brigadier General Alexander Sabar as the Acting Director General of Digital Space Oversight at the Ministry of Komdigi.

It was explained that Brigadier General of Police Alexander Sabar has a track record in law enforcement and cyber supervision. Before serving in Komdigi, he was already known for his expertise in the fields of investigation and digital forensics.
“Collaboration between Komdigi and law enforcement agencies is very necessary, especially in critical situations like now to respond to increasingly complex digital threats, particularly on the issue of online gambling which is very detrimental to society,” said the Minister of Komdigi in a press release received on Thursday (28/11/2024).
This assignment is an implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 174 of 2024 concerning the Ministry of Communication and Digital, which reflects the change in the ministry’s nomenclature in response to the dynamics and challenges of the digital transformation era.

Therefore, a new directorate has now been established to oversee crimes in the digital space.

The Minister of Communication and Information Technology hopes that Brigadier General Alexander’s assignment can expedite the efforts to cleanse the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology from the threat of digital crimes while also increasing public trust in the security of the digital space in Indonesia.

For your information, Brigadier General Alexander has undergone various specialized trainings that support his expertise, such as Computer Investigation and Forensics from Interpol United States and the VFC Method Training organized by the Cyber Crimes Investigation Center.

Not only that, he also participated in the Computer Investigation and Forensic Training by the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance and the 2nd Interpol Train the Trainer Workshop on Computer Forensics for Asia and South Pacific organized by Interpol.

With that experience and education, he is deemed capable of handling the complexities of digital crimes, including data theft, the spread of illegal content, and online gambling.

Brigadier General Alexander was appointed based on the Chief of Police’s Decree number Sprin/3346/XI/KEP./2024 dated November 18, 2024, to Brigadier General Pol Alexander Sabar, S.I.K., M.H. as a senior officer in the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, who is currently assigned to the National Narcotics Agency, to carry out duties as the Director General of Digital Space Oversight.

Previously, at the International Digital Dialogue Conference (IDDC) 2024 in Berlin, Germany, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid emphasized the importance of fundamental principles in digital transformation, which include inclusivity, empowerment, and trust.

“Digital transformation must be driven by fundamental principles such as inclusivity, empowerment, and trust,” said the Minister of Communication and Digital, quoted on Monday (25/11/2024).

Therefore, he continued, the Indonesian government (specifically Komdigi) prioritizes the availability of reliable and affordable internet access for all citizens, creating a digital economy ecosystem that empowers society, and enhancing media and digital literacy among the public.

The presence of the Minister of Digital Affairs at IDDC 2024 is not only to share insights at this conference but also to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the German Ministry of Digital and Transport, as well as to hold several strategic bilateral meetings.

For your information, this MoU is a continuation of the progress from the annual Indonesian-German Digital Dialogue (IGDD) forum, which in 2023 resulted in the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) on Cooperation in the Field of Digitalization.

In the MoU signed by Minister of Communication and Information Technology Meutya Hafid along with the German Minister of Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing, six strategic cooperation areas were agreed upon.

Among them are Digital Policy and Strategy, Data Policy, Internet Processes and Governance, Digital Technology, Sustainable Digital Transformation, and Digital Inclusion, including the development of digital economic infrastructure and internet accessibility.

Meeting with Indonesian Startup Innovators

In addition to the main agenda at IDDC 2024, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Meutya Hafid also held a bilateral meeting with Japan’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Takuo Imagawa.

This meeting emphasized the importance of cross-country cooperation in addressing digital challenges, including AI, and leveraging the opportunities presented by global digital transformation.

In between the conference, the Minister of Digital Affairs also met with Indonesian startup innovators participating in IDDC 2024.

“The participation of Indonesian startups in forums like this is an important step to introduce Indonesian innovations to the international stage. I believe that collaboration with international partners will further strengthen the digital technology ecosystem in Indonesia,” Meutya emphasized.
