Jakarta, Deputy Chairman of the DPP Gerindra Party, Budisatrio Djiwandono, has proposed to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) to establish Indonesian cultural centers in various countries.
According to him, this step is considered an important strategy in strengthening Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy on the international stage.
“I think this is just a suggestion to support cultural diplomacy, even though there is already a ministry for it.” “If we learn from several friendly countries, they have cultural centers in Indonesia as well as in other countries,” said Budisatrio in his statement on Tuesday (3/12/2024).
According to the Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, such cultural centers have become a common practice carried out by many developed countries. For example, Japan with the Japan Foundation, France with the Institut Français, or Germany with the Goethe-Institut.
The existence of these centers not only serves to introduce culture but also to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations with the host country.
Budisatrio believes that the establishment of Indonesian cultural centers abroad is not merely about introducing traditional arts and culture such as dance, music, or typical Nusantara cuisine.
Moreover, this initiative can serve as a bridge in building international economic, trade, and investment cooperation.
“This cultural center can bring significant economic benefits, especially for creative economy actors and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia,” explained Budisatrio.
Cultural Promotion and Diplomacy Event
Budisatrio added that these centers could serve as promotional venues for Indonesian local products, such as batik, handicrafts, and traditional Indonesian coffee, which have great potential in the global market.
He also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with relevant ministries, such as the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Ministry of Trade, to make this program one of the national strategic priorities.
“With good synergy between ministries, this program can have a significant impact on Indonesia’s image in the international arena,” he added.
Budisatrio hopes this proposal receives serious attention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, considering the great potential that can be achieved through cultural diplomacy.
“Cultural diplomacy is not just about introducing the nation’s identity, but also serves as a means to strengthen Indonesia’s position in various fields, including the economy and geopolitics,” he concluded.
