Jakarta – Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman, also known as Gus Miftah, announced his resignation from his position as the Special Envoy of the President for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development.
Gus Miftah made his statement at his own Islamic boarding school, Ora Aji, in Kapanewon Kalasan, Sleman Regency, on Friday (6/12/2024).
Miftah said that his decision to resign from his government position came after deep reflection and was in accordance with his heart’s content.
“With all humility and sincerity, and with full awareness, I wish to convey a decision that I have deeply contemplated.” “I have decided to resign from my duties as the Special Envoy of the President for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development,” said Miftah.
Miftah admitted that his decision to resign was not under pressure from anyone, including the uproar on social media due to the viral video with the iced tea seller.
When announcing his decision to resign as the president’s envoy, Miftah quoted Surah Ali Imran verse 26, which speaks about power belonging to God, and that God can revoke the power granted to humans at His will. He also appeared to be slightly choked up when reading his decision.
“Not because of anyone’s request. But I made this decision out of my deep love, respect, and responsibility towards Mr. President Prabowo Subianto and the entire society,” said Miftah, who was wearing dark glasses while delivering his press statement.
Petition Asking Miftah to Resign

A netizen named Dika Prakasa created a petition on the website change.org. Its content requests President Prabowo Subianto to dismiss Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman, also known as Gus Miftah, from his position as the Special Envoy of the President for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development.
This petition against Gus Miftah was created on December 4, 2024, or a day after the video of Miftah Maulana calling the iced tea seller “gob**k” went viral and made netizens furious. Miftah Maulana has indeed apologized and even embraced the iced tea seller.
It seems that netizens are tired of the many viral cases that end with an apology. On Friday (December 6, 2024) morning, the petition against Gus Miftah had been signed by more than 250 thousand people. This is not the only petition against the President’s Special Envoy. Allegedly, there are 6 others.
Dika Prakasa wrote, “December 3, 2024, the day when netizens across the country felt deep pain and heartbreak over what happened to the iced tea seller, a father who fought for his family, being treated disrespectfully and inhumanely by a religious leader, Gus Miftah.”
