Tom Lembong’s Wife Asks the National Commission on Human Rights to Defend Her Husband’s Human Rights

Jakarta – Franciska Wihardja, the wife of Tom Lembong, expressed her feelings about her husband’s condition, who is currently imprisoned.

According to her, the determination of suspect status and detention by the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) was carried out arbitrarily, violating Tom Lembong’s human rights.

“He (Tom) came four times when summoned, he complied with all the summons and came as a witness.” So when he suddenly became a suspect, we were all shocked! Because there was no indication, we were never told why he became a suspect. “That’s why we feel that suddenly he was arrested and handcuffed, as a family, it is very painful,” said Franciska to the media when met at the Indonesian National Commission on Human Rights Office, Central Jakarta, Friday (6/12/2024).

Franciska believes that her husband always has good intentions for the nation and the country, especially for the Indonesian people. She believes that this was done instinctively in every policy he made while serving as the Minister of Trade.

“As far as I know, Mr. Tom’s good intentions have always been to do good for the community. To help.” That is his conscience, and it cannot be denied. So whatever he does, I believe it is for the good of the Indonesian people,” she is convinced.

However, unfortunately, Franciska must accept the reality that her husband’s sincerity for the nation has been disappointed by arbitrary legal actions.

“It turns out we are disappointed and the human rights of Mr. Tom were violated. So I feel that these are indeed Mr. Tom’s human rights and many of them were violated. That’s why we filed a complaint about this to the National Commission on Human Rights,” she asserted.

Believing There Is Not Enough Evidence

Franciska assured that one thing that still remains a question mark and has no answer is the two pieces of evidence used as the basis for designating Tom Lembong as a suspect. She noted that the Attorney General’s Office has not been able to show this to her, as Tom’s family.

“Because we, as a family, feel that our good faith is not being respected by law enforcement. We are still questioning (about the evidence), we still have the good faith to go to a pretrial hearing and feel that from this pretrial hearing we can achieve justice,” Franciska concluded.

Regarding the absence of evidence, when separately confirmed, Zaid Mushafi as the Legal Team for Tom Lembong also emphasized that they have not been shown the two pieces of evidence that implicate their client as a suspect.

“Not yet, until today not yet. After the pretrial yesterday also not yet, we were last questioned on November 1, now it’s December 6, our question is what is the urgency for him to be detained?,” Zaid concluded.
