Indonesia Will No Longer Import Salt by 2025

Jakarta-, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, stated that policies involving multiple parties are needed to achieve the food self-sufficiency target by 2027.

The formulation of these policies includes the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), which oversees and manages food in the fisheries and maritime sectors.

“I’ll take one example.” If we want to achieve rice self-sufficiency, the policies are already extraordinary, almost involving all ministries. Then there is also the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) which is very decisive (regarding) the ocean, its fish, not to mention the vast biodiversity, and the downstreaming of the maritime sector,” said Zulhas at the Indonesia Marine & Fisheries Business Forum in Jakarta, Tuesday (10/12/2024).

“If in agriculture, rice needs irrigation, there is the Minister of Public Works. If fertilizer is needed, there is a state-owned enterprise,” he continued.

Zulhas further stated that to catch up with Thailand and Vietnam, which are already strong in the food sector, Indonesia needs to gather superior seeds.

“There is no negotiation. The President has ordered food self-sufficiency by 2027 at the latest. But for permanent sovereignty, we need a longer time,” he said.

“We haven’t conducted research on superior seeds for 10 years,” said Zulhas.

On that occasion, Zulhas also praised the performance of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, in overseeing Indonesia’s fisheries and marine sector.

“We just had a meeting yesterday.” This Mr. Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is extraordinary. He has been extended for 5 years because he is indeed great,” he said.

“He told us, ‘Mr. Coordinating Minister, I will handle the salt issue.'” “If I am given the responsibility to control salt, next year we won’t need to import salt anymore. So next year there will be no salt imports,” revealed Zulhas.
