Prabowo Will Grant Amnesty to Prisoners in President Insult Cases

Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has approved the granting of amnesty or sentence remission to several prisoners. Amnesty will be given, among others, to prisoners involved in cases of insult and ITE violations against the head of state.

“Some cases related to insults or ITE violations involving the head of state, or the President has requested amnesty for these cases,” said Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas after a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, Friday (13/12/2024).

In addition, he said, amnesty will be granted to prisoners with a history of prolonged illness and mental disorders. Supratman mentioned that a total of 1,000 prisoners in this category have been proposed to receive amnesty.

“There are also several cases related to people with prolonged illnesses, including some of our inmates who are already classified as having mental disorders. And there are also those suffering from prolonged diseases including HIV, there are approximately around a thousand or so people, and they are also requested to be granted amnesty,” he explained.

Supratman stated that Prabowo agreed to grant amnesty to prisoners involved in cases related to Papua. There are 18 names of Papua case prisoners who will receive amnesty.

“Including several cases related to Papua, there are approximately 18 people, but those who are not armed, the President also agreed to grant amnesty,” said Supratman.

There are 44 thousand inmates proposed to receive amnesty.

Prabowo will also grant amnesty to rehabilitated narcotics offenders. However, the government will conduct an assessment to determine which narcotics offenders will receive amnesty.

“And also those who should receive rehabilitation due to drug use, they are also requested to be granted amnesty. However, the exact number will be communicated later after we conduct an assessment together with the Minister of Immigration and Corrections,” he said.

According to him, there are 44,000 names of prisoners proposed to receive presidential amnesty. Supratman said the government will seek consideration from the DPR before determining the number and names of prisoners who will receive amnesty.

“But next, we will seek consideration from the DPR. What will the dynamics be like in the DPR later?” We will wait until we officially submit it to the parliament to get their consideration,” concluded Supratman.
