Refusal to Take Year-End Shift Triggers Junior Koas Family to Assault Unsri Young Doctor in Palembang

Palembang – Trending on social media (Instagram) @palembang.update, a young doctor or intern from Universitas Sriwijaya (Unsri) was beaten by the family of a junior intern at a café on Jalan Demang Lebar Daun, Palembang City, South Sumatra, Thursday (12/12/2024).

The beating was carried out by the family members of the junior medical intern, who were dissatisfied with the daily duty schedule set by the senior medical intern assigned to Siti Fatimah Hospital in Palembang.

The chief resident named Lutfhi was beaten indiscriminately by a man in a red shirt. Even though he was separated by people there, the man ignored them and vented his frustration by resorting to physical violence.

This conflict began when Lutfi was approached by the family of a junior medical intern at Unsri, leading to a verbal altercation. It is suspected that the perpetrator was upset because the junior intern was assigned a night shift at the end of 2024.

In the video, a man wearing a red shirt is seen arriving with his family to confront a junior resident doctor along with his female friend, who are both wearing doctor uniforms.

From the information obtained, the man in the red shirt is a family member of the junior resident, who also worked with the victim at one of the government-owned hospitals in Palembang City.

“So the one who was beaten was the Chief Koas (kepala koas). The man in the red shirt and the woman are from the family of one of the interns,” the caption in the video uploaded by the Instagram account @palembang.update.

The victim, who suffered quite severe injuries to the face, eventually underwent intensive treatment at Bhayangkara Hospital (RS) Moh Hasan Palembang and has already undergone a forensic examination. Not accepting the assault, Lutfi immediately reported the perpetrator to the South Sumatra Police on the same day.

“The victim has already filed a report at the South Sumatra Police last night. The victim’s report has been received and is still under investigation,” he said.

The Instagram account @bedahunsri also commented on the viral assault video on social media. They condemned the physical violence committed against one of their senior students.

“In connection with the news of physical violence against a Young Doctor (Koas) by an irresponsible individual, we, the large family of KSM Bedah and Surgical Residents of Unsri, STRONGLY CONDEMN such actions,” wrote @bedahunsri.

Expressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Unsri, Syarif Husin, the leadership of Unsri conveyed deep concern and regret over the incident of the beating that occurred.

Unsri is disappointed

“Acts of violence like this are clearly unjustifiable; we firmly condemn all forms of violence both on and off campus,” he said.

To ensure the safety and comfort of all campus residents, the management of Unsri has formed an internal investigation team to gather data on the actual chronology of the incident.

He has also heard that the victim has reported the assault case to the South Sumatra Police. They support the police in thoroughly investigating the case that tarnishes Unsri’s reputation.

“We are committed to supporting this investigation process professionally in accordance with the applicable procedures. We also urge all parties to maintain peace and refrain from actions that could exacerbate the situation,” he said.
