Logical Reasons from HMI Badko Sulutgo Reject the Idea of Regional Elections Being Elected by the DPRD

Gorontalo – The discourse on reinstating the mechanism for regional head elections (pilkada) through the Regional Representative Council (DPRD) has once again come under public scrutiny.

This proposal has resurfaced after President Prabowo Subianto voiced it, citing budget efficiency and reduction of political costs. However, this idea has sparked both support and opposition within the community.

President Prabowo revealed that the large budget previously used for direct regional elections would be better allocated to other urgent needs.

He also believes that the regional election mechanism by the DPRD can reduce the potential for corruption among public officials.

However, several parties consider this discourse a threat to the principles of democracy. Including students who view this as a setback for democracy.

Chairman of the Public Policy Study Division of HMI Badko North Sulawesi-Gorontalo, Novan Lahmudin, strongly criticized the proposal.

“The impact of abolishing direct regional elections is very significant.” “I am sure the majority of the public rejects this idea,” said Novan.

He added that this discourse reflects the fatigue of the political elite in facing competition that directly involves the people.

According to him, if the mechanism of regional elections is returned to the regional parliament, the voice of the people will be neglected.

“This is like reviving the New Order mindset.” “Our democracy could regress,” he said firmly.
