A Mysterious 30-Kilometer Sea Wall Appears in Tangerang, Here Are the Facts

Bandung – Recently, the Indonesian public has been stirred by the news of a mysterious sea fence stretching 30.16 kilometers (km) in the waters of Tangerang Regency, Banten. The fence has attracted public attention since it was first discovered in August 2024.

The fence is made of bamboo six meters high and arranged like a labyrinth in the middle of the sea, driven vertically into the ground. As a result of the fence, the local fishermen’s activities have even been significantly disrupted.

In addition, the bamboo is arranged in layers with a distance of about one meter between each bamboo, and each bamboo is equipped with bamboo weaving, paranet or plant shade nets, and weights made from sand-filled sacks.

Then, within the fence, there are simple square-shaped partitions that clarify a pattern resembling a maze inside it. The fence stretches from Muncung Village to Pakuhaji Village, Tangerang Regency.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has currently sealed off the sea fencing activities. The reason is that the 30.16 km long fence is considered unauthorized.

“From this afternoon until evening, we have been sealing the viral sea enclosure,” said the Director General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance (PSDKP) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Pung Nugroho Saksono, quoting Antara.

They also explained that the presence of the sea fence is disturbing the local fishermen. Meanwhile, the sealing was carried out because the sea fence did not have a permit.

“And it turns out that our interviews with several fishermen disturbed them.” We checked the fence at the KKP and found that it didn’t have a PKKPRL, so it didn’t have a permit. The government, in this case the KKP, is present at sea to seal the coastal fencing,” he said.
