Minister Amran Says Profit and Technology Are Key for the Younger Generation to Farm Through the Food Brigade

To review the implementation of land optimization programs, rice field expansion, and the formation of the Food Brigade, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman (Mentan Amran) conducted a working visit to Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan. This visit highlights the importance of involving the younger generation in the agricultural sector through the use of modern technology and promising economic opportunities.

“Today we directly checked the preparation for land optimization, rice field expansion, and the involvement of the millennial generation in South Kalimantan. Alhamdulillah, now there are more than 1,000 millennials directly involved.” “We distributed modern machines for them to use,” said Minister Amran while inspecting the land optimization site in Anjir Pasar Village, Anjir Pasar District, Barito Kuala Regency, on Friday (22/11/2024).

According to Minister Amran, the two main keys that can attract the younger generation to enter the agricultural sector are high technology and clear profits.

“Millennials and Generation Z will engage in agriculture if two conditions are met: first, a minimum profit of Rp10 million per month, and second, the use of high technology. Without these two conditions, it is impossible for them to get involved in the field,” he explained.

Minister Amran cited harvest mechanization as an innovation that can save time and energy. Previously, the manual harvesting process with a sickle took up to 25 days for one hectare per person. However, with the help of modern tools, the same task can be completed in just two hours.

“Previously, harvesting was done with sickles, now with modern technology, the younger generation is definitely interested.” “We donated these machines in groups so that this program can run sustainably,” he added.

Currently, the Food Brigade Program in South Kalimantan has formed 155 brigades with more than 2,000 members. This brigade has become a new hope for the agricultural sector. Through this program, agricultural productivity can increase, while the younger generation gains promising economic opportunities.

“The solution is technological mechanization, good water management, and attractive income.” With this step, we are optimistic that the younger generation can become the main driving force of future agriculture,” emphasized Minister of Agriculture Amran.

On the same occasion, the Manager of the Mitra Tani Food Brigade, Rahmad Efendi, stated that this program is very potential and promising for young farmers.

“We manage 200 hectares here as per the directives. In terms of progress, land preparation has reached 75%. From a technological standpoint, we are aided by our background in the Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Service Unit (UPJA), making the adaptation to modern technology easier,” explained Rahmad.

Rahmad also presented the business analysis results, which showed significant profit potential. “From the standard of 5 tons of harvest, even if we use a standard below that, the net profit can still reach Rp10 million to Rp17 million per month.” This income comes from rice cultivation and the management of agricultural tools and machinery. So, this is very profitable and gives us great motivation to keep moving forward,” he said.

The Food Brigade Program has become one of the strategic steps of the Ministry of Agriculture to increase agricultural productivity, attract the younger generation, and support national food security through modern technology and sustainable management. Rahmad hopes that this program can run optimally and have a positive impact on agricultural development in his region.

“We are enthusiastic, we ask for your prayers so that we can all remain solid and realize our President’s vision. Thank you, thank you very much, Minister,” he concluded.
