The Government Writes to Apple Regarding the Fate of iPhone Sales in Indonesia: Send Your Negotiators to Meet Us

The government plans to summon representatives or executives from Apple to discuss the continuity of its business in Indonesia.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita revealed that this summons is being carried out by the Government through the Directorate General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (Ilmate) of the Ministry of Industry.

This was revealed by Agus Gumiwang during a press conference at the Ministry of Industry Office in Jakarta on Monday (25/11/2024).

“After leaving this room, Mr. Director General will immediately send an email to America to summon Apple, urgently. To come to Indonesia to discuss with us,” said the Minister of Industry.

“So after leaving this room, the Director General will immediately email Apple in America, so they will promptly send their negotiation team to Indonesia to meet with us,” he continued.

It is known that the Government is currently scrutinizing Apple regarding its business operations in Indonesia.

The government sees that Apple only views Indonesia as a market. In fact, mobile phones, laptops, and tablet PCs (HKT) are very popular in Indonesia.

Therefore, the Government encourages Apple to provide more value to Indonesia. This includes factory investments, job creation, and the development of Human Resources.

Minister of Industry Agus revealed that the Indonesian Government actually received an investment proposal from Apple, worth 100 million US dollars. (AS).

If converted to rupiah, the amount is equivalent to Rp1.58 trillion. (asumsi kurs Rp15.800 per dolar AS).

However, Agus revealed that the figure is considered not in line with what the Government desires.

This, according to Minister of Industry Agus, is considered unfair, given that Apple’s market in Indonesia is quite large.

“The calculations are very technocratic, a very technocratic assessment of Apple’s proposal for or that will propose an investment worth 100 million US dollars,” said Agus at the Ministry of Industry Office, Jakarta, Monday (25/11/2024).

“First, based on the previous technocratic assessment, that figure does not meet, does not fulfill the number that we consider fair,” he continued.

For example, several other technology companies are actually pouring their investments into Indonesia above the figure of Rp5 trillion.

Not only that, Apple is also investing in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam and Thailand. However, the figures are much more fantastic.

Thus, the investment offered by Apple worth 100 million US dollars is deemed unfair.

The assessment of fair investment value as intended by the Minister of Industry is based on four criteria.

First, the comparison of Apple’s investment in countries other than Indonesia, including investment in factory construction.

Second, the creation of added value and state revenue. Third, the creation of jobs.

Fourth, a comparison of investments in gadget or laptop brands in Indonesia. As mentioned earlier.

On that occasion, Minister of Industry Agus also requested that Apple immediately fulfill the investment commitment agreed upon in 2023.

As for Apple’s commitment last year, it was still short by 10 million US dollars.

If this is realized, then Apple will be allowed to sell its latest products, including the iPhone 16.

“Apple has a commitment settlement obligation until 2023 amounting to approximately plus or minus 10 million dollars. The obligation for 2023,” explained Agus Gumiwang.

“Here, because they have not fulfilled this obligation, we have not opened the Apple 16 certification. We have not opened it,” he concluded.
