Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) revealed that at least 138 candidates in the 2024 regional elections are suspected of being involved in corruption cases. This number is divided among candidates for Governor & Deputy Governor, Mayor & Deputy Mayor, as well as Regent & Deputy Regent.
“These candidates include suspects, defendants, convicts, witnesses, reported individuals, and even those mentioned in court proceedings,” wrote ICW in its press release.
“This fact is truly disappointing because it undermines the integrity of the election and presents the people with candidates who have a tarnished track record.” If this corrupt candidate is elected, the potential for corruption and abuse of power will increase even more. Remember, from 2004-2024, 196 regional heads have been arrested by the KPK,” he continued.
Besides corruption, political dynasties also pose a threat that needs to be watched out for. ICW found that 33 out of 37 provinces are affiliated with political dynasties, with 5 provinces having the highest distribution of regional head candidates affiliated with political dynasties: West Nusa Tenggara (11 candidates), Southeast Sulawesi (11 candidates), South Sulawesi (10 candidates), West Sulawesi (9 candidates), and North Sulawesi. (7 kandidat).
As many as 155 out of 582 candidates for the 2024 regional elections are indicated to be affiliated with political dynasties, including parent-child, sibling, husband-wife, in-law, and other familial connections.

This practice has the potential to facilitate corruption in the regions and undermine competition in elections. ICW even recorded 70 corruption cases arising from 54 political dynasties in various regions.
“The public needs to actively check the track records of the candidates to prevent corruption and political dynasties,” wrote ICW.
