The Chinese car manufacturer, BAIC, has a long-term plan to collaborate with local producers in manufacturing vehicles domestically. BAIC plans to start local assembly in early 2025.
The location of the car assembly is at the Handal Indonesia Motor factory. (HIM). Shareholder of JIO Distribusi Indonesia (JDI) Aries Marsudianto has a long-term vision of increasing the number of local components in every car produced.
“BAIC will be integrated into the system as the government currently wants to increase domestic production, therefore next year we have already signed an MOU with Beijing BAIC to start with some assembly first,” he said during the grand opening of BAIC Cibubur, quoted on Friday (29/11/2024).
However, Aries’s plans do not stop there. In the future, BAIC has the potential to collaborate with domestic manufacturers to realize President Prabowo’s dream of having a locally-made car.
“After that, we will enhance our readiness to collaborate with local industries in Indonesia, if necessary with Pindad and others,” said Aries.
The more local industries that get involved, the more workers will be employed because it involves the domestic supply chain. As a result, the Domestic Content Level (TKDN) will continue to increase.
“We will support the creation of our own products so that the Domestic Content Level (TKDN) can be the majority,” said Aries.
To realize the dream of having our own car brand is indeed not easy, therefore, there needs to be a transfer of technology with various parties.
“So in the future, please support all parties so that Indonesia can have and create Indonesian-made products, even if it starts with cooperation from various parties,” he said.
Aries’ plan aligns with President Prabowo’s vision to replace the official cars of ministers and equivalent positions from the Toyota Alphard to the Maung made by PT Pindad. (Persero).
For your information, Prabowo has also made the Maung his official vehicle. The Maung car is a white MV3 Garuda Limousine. PT Pindad stated that they specifically prepared the car for use by President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka after the inauguration.
