Komnas HAM Receives Complaint from Tom Lembong’s Legal Team Regarding Sugar Import Case

Jakarta – Tom Lembong’s Legal Team visited the National Commission on Human Rights Office (Komnas HAM). They submitted a complaint regarding the arrest and designation of their client as a suspect by the Attorney General’s Office in the alleged sugar import corruption case, which is considered a violation of human rights.

According to Komnas HAM Commissioner Hari Kurniawan, the complaint from Tom Lembong’s Legal Team will be studied first over the next seven days before any follow-up actions are taken.

“We certainly need to study this case, for example, there are regulations related to sugar imports and so on that we need to examine further.” Only later, in accordance with the regulations in the Perkom complaint service at the National Human Rights Commission, will the complaints received be handled or followed up within 7 working days,” said Hari at the National Human Rights Commission Office in Jakarta, Friday (6/12/2024).

Hari revealed that in the 60-minute closed-door hearing, the request made by Tom Lembong’s legal team was for the existence of arbitrary actions with discrimination felt by Tom Lembong in the context of the investigation.

“The family stated that they had been questioned 4 times from the 8th and the last on October 29th, and there was no, for example, Sprindik, Sprinhan, and then suddenly they were declared suspects and detained.” “Therefore, they concluded that this is an act of arbitrariness and discrimination in the context of seeking justice,” said Hari.

Hari assured that the complaint submitted this afternoon will be processed. The goal is to achieve justice for Tom Lembong, who feels he has been discriminated against by the Prosecutor’s Office.

When asked whether the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) would submit an Amicus Curiae or friend of the court brief in Tom Lembong’s trial, Hari could not decide yet. Because, there needs to be a study and follow-up when the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) intends to become an Amicus Curiae.

“The issue of Amicus Curiae, I cannot decide because it has already been followed up on. Regarding the monitoring issue, there was a request from the family for the National Commission on Human Rights to conduct oversight and monitoring related to Mr. Lembong’s case,” emphasized Hari.
