Low Voter Participation in Regional Elections, Expert: There is Political Fatigue After the Presidential Election

Public Policy Researcher from the Institute for Development of Policy and Local Partnerships (IDP-LP), Riko Noviantoro, believes that the low voter turnout in the 2024 Regional Elections is due to political fatigue.

“There is a situation of political fatigue, where the public is tired of the political situation post-presidential election, especially with the various maneuvers leading up to the presidential election at that time,” said Riko Noviantoro when asked for his response to the low voter turnout in the 2024 Regional Elections, in Depok, Tuesday (10/12/2024) as reported by Anttara.

According to Riko, this should be a collective correction, especially for political parties, political actors, academics, and election activists.

“They certainly understand this and it should serve as a lesson for better future elections,” he said.

He said that the low voter turnout could be a symbol of public distrust in the electoral mechanism.

“This means that all stages of the election are considered questionable, which discourages people from participating in this five-yearly democratic festivity,” he said.

The KPU Must Evaluate

Riko also believes that several regions show active involvement of Gen-Z voters, even during the gubernatorial election campaign period.

For that reason, he urged the KPU as the election organizer to evaluate all the stages that have been undertaken.

“The KPU should provide an explanation for that fact,” he said.
