Jakarta Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud Md criticized the charges and the light sentence given to Harvey Moeis in connection with the tin corruption case.
Mahfud said that based on the indictment, Harvey was found guilty of corruption and money laundering (TPPU) and caused the state a loss of Rp300 trillion. However, he said, the prosecutor only demanded a 12-year prison sentence for Harvey and the return of Rp210 billion to the state.
“Harvey Moeis was charged with corruption and money laundering that caused state financial losses of Rp 300 trillion.” His charge is concrete “causing state financial loss,” not the potential “causing state economic loss,” said Mahfud through his Instagram account @mohmahfudmd, Thursday (27/12/2024).
“But the prosecutor only demanded the return of state finances amounting to Rp 210 billion and a fine of Rp 1 billion with a prison sentence of 12 years,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the judge only sentenced Harvey to 6.5 years in prison and a fine, along with a total state restitution of only Rp 211 billion. Mahfud also considered this verdict very distressing because the punishment was so light amidst the significant losses to the state due to the corruption case.

“Besides the light prison sentence, what is disheartening is that from the accusation of causing state financial losses of Rp 300 trillion, the verdict was only 211 billion, or about 0.007 percent of the alleged state financial loss,” he explained.
“Illogical, it strikes a sense of justice,” said Mahfud Md through his X account, responding to Harvey Moeis’s sentence.
