South Lampung Fire Department Evacuates 2-Meter Crocodile Owned by Resident in Kalianda

Lampung -The officers of the Fire and Rescue Service (Damkartan) of Lampung Selatan Regency successfully evacuated a 2-meter-long crocodile from a resident’s house in Kedaton Village, Kalianda District, on Tuesday (7/1/2025). The Head of the Fire and Rescue Department of South Lampung, Rully, revealed that the crocodile had been kept by a resident since 2013, when it was still 40 cm long. After more than a decade, the reptile has now grown to a length of 2 meters.

“This crocodile has been raised by the locals since it was small.” At first, there might have been an emotional bond between the owner and the animal. However, due to its increasing size, the residents became confused about how to take care of it,” said Rully to reporters on Wednesday (8/1/2025).

Before the evacuation, Damkartan officers provided education to the crocodile owner about the dangers of keeping wild animals, which are also classified as protected species. “We conveyed that keeping wild animals is very dangerous, both for the owner and the surrounding environment.” In addition, crocodiles are protected animals, so they cannot be kept without permission,” he explained.

After gaining an understanding, the resident finally agreed to hand over the crocodile to the Fire Department for evacuation. “The evacuation process went smoothly.” The crocodile will be handed over to the Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) for further handling,” said Rully.

The evacuation of this crocodile serves as a reminder for the community not to keep wild animals that can endanger safety and violate wildlife protection regulations.
